Alphonso Davies is a star in the making. There is no question in my mind.

I remember when I lived in Virginia between 1998-2003 and there was an American phenom you may have heard of, Freddy Adu. He was labelled the American Pele. 16 years old (so they say) and he was tearing up youth leagues in America. In the 2004 entry draft Adu was chosen first overall by DC United. He was 14 years old. The boy joined a club who had nurtured esteemed players like Ben Olsen. 

Adu was largely a bust. He's been a journeyman footballer who has never reached the heights expected of him. Why? Ultimately I think it comes down to having too much success and expectation too soon. A 14 year old boy expected to fulfill the shoes of Pele as a generational talent? Do me a favour. It's similar to expecting in Lonzo Ball to fill the shoes of Kobe and Magic - sorry but it ain't happenin'.

Alonso Davies seems different. He's grounded and there's not much hype about him. Yes, our sleepy town of Vancouver thinks he's the best thing since good ole' Bobby Lenarduzzi but I don't think Davies will feel the weight of the world because of that comparison. The weight of Burnaby Mountain perhaps? Naaaa, not even. 

I just watched the young man clinically finish a breakaway in the Gold Cup versus French Guiana - yeah you heard me. Regardless of the opposition, he was clinical. A one vs. one presents the same pressure regardless of the competition. Davies handled it like a veteran. 

The best thing the Whitecaps can do is alleviate the pressure on the young phenom by supplementing him with an experienced star. Someone that's been there and done that. A Drogba, Pirlo or Bastian (can't be arsed to spell his last name). Will they? I highly doubt it.  

Nonetheless, with the right mentorship Davies is going to be a legend and we'll always remember that it started on the green (astroturf) of BC Place Stadium.
