All Ball

Tell me how the picture above is not a red card?

Saido Mane took a chance, a chance many strikers apparently would take, in going for a football with his studs showing at the height of Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson's head. Ederson stands at approximately 6'2 and Mane elevated himself to three feet off the ground in a flying karate kick to try and nick the ball. He nearly took the City man's head clean off.

A red card was absolutely the correct result and I'm baffled at how many people think it wasn't. First, Mane cowardly endangered his opponent in showing his studs. He should have had the awareness to see that it was going to be a highly dangerous challenge and retract from it. I can't stand the complaint of, "but referee, I went for the ball!" It's a bollocks shout as regardless of going for the ball or not, if you put your opponent in danger, you're in the shit. From the above picture, do you not think the Mane saw Ederson's head AND the ball? Second, would the goal have stood if Mane got to the ball first before Ederson? It bloody well shouldn't have if his studs were that high. Dangerous play, foul and a yellow card should be the call.

What really pissed me off about the furore around the foul was the amount of people who felt that it shouldn't have been a red including Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and the club's hierarchy. Today they had their appeal of the red rejected, and rightly so.

Emotion can cloud judgement but when the dust settles common sense should prevail.
